As the Huns continued their way westward into Europe the Gothic and Roman leadership made an alliance, and the tribes were finally given permission to permanently settle. It was an alliance unpopular with many Romans. However, the permission came with a caveat: in return for land and provisions, the Goths had to promise to provide soldiers for the Roman army.
