The problem with agriculture is that it’s self-limiting. When you harvest crops, you remove nutrients from the soil, until it turns barren. Even the most fertile land will lose productivity after 10-15 years of farming, unless you replenish the soil with fertilizer. In the early days of agriculture before fertilizers or techniques for prolonging the fertility of land (such as crop rotation) had been invented, the solution was slash-and-burn farming. People farmed land for a few years until it stopped producing, then moved on to farm elsewhere. This limited the scope of farming, because short stays are not conducive to land improvement. People don’t invest enormous amounts of labor in digging canals or building dykes if they plan to move on in a few years.
