### L1065 how to use the stars as a compass > Carolinian pilots knew which zenith stars pass directly over different islands, so when exploring unknown waters they would sail upwind, always knowing that they could reverse course and use zenith stars to return home. They also used a form of star compass, based on the North Star, five positions of the Southern Cross, and thirteen constellations.
