> A pendant carved from [mammoth](https://www.newscientist.com/article/2268417-first-million-year-old-dna-extracted-from-siberian-mammoth-teeth/) ivory is the oldest known ornate jewellery made by humans in Eurasia. The discovery is shaking up our understanding of [the emergence of so-called symbolic behaviours](https://www.newscientist.com/article/mg25133450-700-lost-art-of-the-stone-age-the-cave-paintings-redrawing-human-history/) in the region.
