[12:38 PM] GearRatio: I've had that positioning before and it's a fun panic to try and figure out where it's all coming from @GearRatio Nice! What's that, like >20k hits? [12:40 PM] Eleanor: 5k ish recorded by wordpress but I had like 4 hours of downtime hahaha so who knows what it could have been [12:40 PM] Eleanor: wordpress on a digital ocean droplet without caching isn't really designed for that kind of traffic =p [12:40 PM] GearRatio: So kind of a lot will leak in over the next couple of days/weeks [12:41 PM] GearRatio: because there's a lot of people who repackage the HN frontpage in different ways [12:41 PM] Eleanor: interesting [12:41 PM] Eleanor: and yeah I think I'm already at 2k for today [12:41 PM] GearRatio: Twitter bots who scrape it and retweet it, ect [12:42 PM] GearRatio: The big temptation is to try and duplicate it by submitting your own stuff there but it doesn't work great, I've found [12:42 PM] GearRatio: Anyway congrats! [12:44 PM] GearRatio: I'm doing a lot of hackernews analysis with various ad-hoc data tools over the last couple of days [12:44 PM] GearRatio: right now I'm looking at something like the top 1000 favorited posts by the top hackernews-favoriting-users, and it's interesting [12:45 PM] Jacob O'Bryant: HN is such a huge roulette ha ha. I've had multiple times where I submit my own posts, nothing happens, then someone else submits the same post 2 days later and it hits front page [12:46 PM] GearRatio: Yeah, it's really weird. The most consistent way I've found to get frontpaged there is actually to get marginal revolution to link you [12:46 PM] GearRatio: it's the combination of their audience overlap making sure you get posted, and the "oh yeah I saw this on MR" legitimacy making them feel comfortable upvoting you [12:47 PM] GearRatio: because you really only have that 5-20 minutes to get those 40 upvotes [12:48 PM] GearRatio: The other thing about HN is subs you get from them are deceptive, in a good way [12:49 PM] GearRatio: like any subs you get that are visible you should really multiply by like 1.25-1.5, because so many of them RSS [12:49 PM] GearRatio: I'm talking too much [12:50 PM] GearRatio: Weird, interesting ecosystem @GearRatio like any subs you get that are visible you should really multiply by like 1.25-1.5, because so many of them RSS [12:53 PM] Jacob O'Bryant: Ha, never thought about that [12:54 PM] Jacob O'Bryant: that's the other way to get on the front page btw: put "RSS" in the title [12:55 PM] GearRatio: Wait, I'm too dumb to understand this [12:57 PM] GearRatio: If there's a hackernews interest multiplier I don't know I sorta wanna
